New To Letterboxing!

From: Paula Collins (boxer@cinemaboxers.com) | Date: 2006-07-25 02:19:40 UTC
Hello Everyone...

We just started! Found out about it by accident, and thought it
sounded great.

We attempted 3 our first day - only located one. We think one was
missed, and we think the other was moved.

The next day - hit one - another was moved.

Today... we found 8! 7 normal ones, and a hitchhiker!

Been visiting all the sites, and am glad to be a part of this new
hobby!

Paula, Jim & Joel
(Cinema Boxers - we show boxer dogs, but the name seemed, well...
fitting - so we are using it!)

Welcome! I too found letterboxing by accident! I was
doing a web search fro something else and bumbled into
the site:) It was a natural fit for me, becuase I
already like hiking, and I already carve my own
stamps! Congrats on your recent finds:)

Hi Cinema Boxers,

Just wanted to invite you to join the Letterbox Great Lakes Yahoo! group. We are a regional group of letterboxers in the western Great Lakes states -- MI, IL, IN, OH, WI, MN. The regional group is a great place to get to know others in your area, learn about gatherings near you and just keep up with what is going on in letterboxing at a level a little closer to home.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LbGLK/

Also, if you are interested, there is a Yahoo! group for new letterboxers that is a good place to get all your questions answered and interact with other boxers who are where you are with the game.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/newboxers/

Welcome! Sounds like you are already having a great time with it!

SpringChick

Hi Cinema Boxers from Northeast Illinois
I'm Goose Chaser from West Central Iowa. Almost neighbors. We
spend a lot of time in Milwaukee and Chicago and I letterbox in
those areas when I get the time. Maybe I'll find one of your boxes
someday soon. Welcome to a great pasttime.

I am SO happy for you....which is my backhanded way of saying how
jealous I am !!! I also just started, but not as many so close to
me...I have to plan as we travel. Isn't fun? Can see how can become

Any chance that mischief might include sending back my '8 Glasses'
box? :-)

Take care

Sigh - note to self to not hit Send before chainging the To line.....
Melanie and I did a long-distance plant deal and I was just wanting
to think about getting the logbook to look at.

Speaking of which, I'm thinking about doing something similar again -
it was fun. :-) Anyone interested in trading stamps - each of us
planting the other's stamp? I'm not the most stellar carver in the
world, but I do enjoy it and would like to plant more.....

I am SOOOO excited about all these midwest newbies!! Welcome to
letterboxing. It's an obssession I'm not afraid to admit that I
love! One word of advice about those preprinted clues in
folders...take a look at the clues on line before you head out. You
never know when they might change. I've had to change some of mi
clues due to animal invasion or other legitimate reasons and I hate
to do it thinking about those preprinted clues leading someone
astray. I've learned to check my preprinted clues before I go. You
might be glad you did.

Thanks for the tip! I'm recovering from surgery right now, so I'm
not getting out to do any letterboxing. Surgery in summer stinks.
But, I am carving stamps and making boxes to place. I'll check out
Stephenson County when I can.

Sorry to hear about having surgery in summer. My daughter did too. Carving stamps and preparing boxes to place seems like a wonderful idea to me. I'm still trying to get brave enough to place a box here where I live.

Don't be scared of it. Just have fun with it. My first boxes were
simple and I've learned a lot. I had to redo some clues and rehide
a couple boxes. My biggest mistake was planting boxes in February
and March, when there's no undergrowth in the woods. Come summer
time some of my boxes were unapproachable due to poison ivy and
nettles. I say...wear long pants! And one of my boxes was buried
so deep in the forest, I couldn't even find it! I finally did find
it and rehid it and edited the clues. Then I sent an email to the
newbie boxers who couldn't find it and told me about it, and
apologized! I told them to tell their kids this one was MY fault.
I've been at this game only since January, and I'm still learning
and having a blast with it.

I agree with the wear long pants.....in California we have poison oak, and I'm still recovering from getting scratched by a branch, therefore a bit worse than normal reaction....bummer is, I still didn't find the LB and it was my 2nd attempt. The placer said she'd checked and it's still there....so as soon as poison oak is gone, I will be back ! ! !
